Does the viscosity of hydraulic oil have a big impact on the life of Road Roller?

Jun 06, 2025

1. Lubrication performance
The viscosity of hydraulic oil directly affects its lubrication effect. If the viscosity is too low, it is difficult for the hydraulic oil to form an effective lubricating film between the moving parts, resulting in increased friction and wear between the parts. This will not only reduce the service life of the hydraulic components, but may also cause the equipment to overheat. On the contrary, too high viscosity will increase the energy loss of the hydraulic system, reduce the suction performance of the pump, and may even cause cavitation and damage the internal parts of the hydraulic pump.
2. System efficiency
The change in hydraulic oil viscosity will affect the overall efficiency of the hydraulic system. Too high viscosity will increase the workload and energy consumption of the hydraulic pump and reduce the system response speed. Too low viscosity will lead to increased system leakage, decreased volumetric efficiency and mechanical efficiency of hydraulic components, and further affect the normal operation of the equipment.
3. Component wear
Improper hydraulic oil viscosity will accelerate the aging and damage of hydraulic components. For example, too low viscosity will increase the leakage of the hydraulic system and cause the hydraulic valve to be easily stuck. In addition, changes in hydraulic oil viscosity will also affect the pressure stability of the hydraulic system, resulting in increased component wear.
4. Oil temperature control
The viscosity of hydraulic oil also has an important impact on oil temperature control. Hydraulic oil with too high viscosity is prone to oxidation reaction at high temperature, which accelerates aging and shortens its service life. At the same time, high temperature will reduce the viscosity of hydraulic oil, further increase the risk of leakage, and form a vicious circle.
5. Sealing performance
The change of hydraulic oil viscosity will affect the performance of seals. Too low viscosity may cause the sealing performance of seals to decrease and increase the risk of leakage. Excessive viscosity may put greater pressure on seals and cause damage to seals.
6. Maintenance cost
Choosing the right hydraulic oil viscosity can reduce the maintenance cost of equipment. Hydraulic oil with appropriate viscosity can effectively reduce component wear and extend the service life of hydraulic system, thereby reducing the maintenance frequency and cost of equipment.
