How to Prevent Roller Sticking During Road Roller Operation?

Jan 09, 2026

I. Use of Anti-Sticking Agents

1. Special Anti-Sticking Agent: According to the "Technical Specification for Asphalt Pavement Construction," a special anti-sticking agent (such as water or a special emulsifier) must be used to form a protective film on the roller surface to prevent the asphalt mixture from sticking at high temperatures.

2. Strictly Prohibited: Diesel and gasoline will dissolve the oil in asphalt, damaging the asphalt colloidal structure, leading to decreased adhesion and pavement quality.

3. Alternatives to Lubricating Oil: Although lubricating oil does not dissolve asphalt, it reduces the friction between the roller and the road surface, affecting the compaction effect and potentially contaminating the road surface; therefore, its use is not recommended.

II. Operation of the Water Spraying System

1. Continuous or Intermittent Water Spraying: Set up the water spraying system according to the road conditions to prevent roller sticking. Water spraying can assist in preventing sticking, but its effect may not be as good as that of a special anti-sticking agent.

2. Timing of Water Spraying: During rolling, set up water spraying as needed to ensure the roller surface remains moist and prevent asphalt mixture sticking.

III. Equipment Selection and Maintenance

1. Equipment Parameters: Select a road roller with anti-sticking function, such as the STORIKE/SDBM 2-ton mini road roller (900mm vibratory drum width, 65Hz vibration frequency) or the KERI municipal engineering mini road roller (30L water tank capacity).

2. Maintenance: Regularly check the road roller's water spraying system and anti-sticking agent application device to ensure normal equipment operation.

IV. Operating Techniques

1. Starting and Driving: When starting, smoothly push the reversing lever to avoid sudden acceleration that could cause sticking.

2. Steering and Braking: When steering, first move the reversing lever to the neutral position, and then change direction after the vehicle has come to a complete stop; when braking, first depress the main clutch, then depress the brake pedal to avoid sudden braking that could cause sticking.

3. Joint Operation: When multiple road rollers are operating, the distance between them should be greater than 3 meters to avoid mutual interference that could cause sticking.
