What are the signs of an overloaded road roller?

I. Obvious signs of engine overload

Power reduction: Slow acceleration, inability to climb slopes, and a sudden drop in speed during operation.

Abnormal smoke emission: Continuous black smoke (incomplete combustion) or blue smoke (oil participating in combustion), indicating that the load has exceeded limits.

Overheating: Water temperature exceeds 95°C, and even at low speeds, it is difficult to cool down, posing a risk of cylinder scoring.

Sudden increase in fuel consumption: Fuel consumption per unit time increases significantly, leading to a sharp decline in fuel economy.

II. Abnormal pressure in the hydraulic system

Hydraulic oil temperature rises by 15–20°C: Oil viscosity decreases, seals age, and the risk of leakage increases.

Slow or weak operation: The vibratory roller is difficult to start and stop, steering is heavy, and lifting is slow, affecting construction efficiency.

Pipeline leakage or rupture: System pressure exceeds limits, joints or hoses leak, and in severe cases, a sudden pipe rupture may occur.

III. Machine Control and Structural Abnormalities

Braking distance increased by 1.5–2 times: Overload alters the center of gravity, resulting in slow emergency braking response and significant safety hazards.

Steering delay of 0.5–1 second: Reduced control precision, increasing the risk of collisions in narrow areas.

Microscopic cracks appear in steel wheel welds: Accumulated metal fatigue poses a risk of sudden fracture.

Vibration bearing life shortened by 30%–50%: "Buzzing" or "clicking" noises occur during operation, increasing the risk of seizure and damage.

IV. Instrument and Intelligent System Alarms
Modern road rollers are equipped with electronic monitoring systems. Overload will trigger the following warnings:

Engine load consistently > 90%
Hydraulic system pressure exceeds 16–25 MPa
Vibration frequency or amplitude deviates from set value
ECU reports fault codes such as P0234 (overpressure) and P0087 (low fuel pressure).
