How to Properly Operate and Maintain a Road Roller?

Nov 26, 2025

Operating Steps and Techniques

1. Pre-Start Inspection: Walk around the vehicle to check for engine oil leaks and hydraulic hose integrity. Ensure the gear lever is in neutral and the handbrake is engaged. For tire rollers, check tire pressure and inflate if necessary.

2. Starting and Preheating: After starting, idle for 5 minutes to warm up. Drive at low speed until the temperature is normal before increasing speed. When rolling, follow the principle of "static compaction before vibration." For soft soil, perform two static compactions before vibration.

3. Driving and Vibration Control: Use the lever to move forward/backward to control forward/reverse, and the steering wheel to turn.

The vibration function must be activated while driving; do not activate it while stationary (as this can damage bearings).

When compacting asphalt pavements, the temperature must drop below 120℃ before activating vibration.

4. Safety Precautions: Use low gear when operating on slopes; do not coast in neutral or shift gears. Maintain a distance of at least 3 meters between multiple machines operating at the same time, and leave a 1-meter safety distance from the edge of any pit.

When making sharp turns, the speed must be ≤3 km/h, and high gear is prohibited.

Maintenance Guide

1. Daily Maintenance
Clean mud from the rollers and tighten loose screws every shift.

Check the hydraulic oil, engine oil, and coolant levels, and clean the filter element.

2. Periodic Maintenance
Change the engine oil and filter every 500 hours, and clean the hydraulic oil tank every 1000 hours.

Check the wear of the clutch and brake, and adjust the clearance.

For long-term storage, the machine must be sealed. Upon unsealing, complete the maintenance for each shift and record the results.

3. Fault Prevention
Immediately stop the machine and inspect it if abnormal hydraulic pressure is detected.

Lubricate the vibratory roller bearings regularly to avoid dry friction.

Common Operating Prohibitions

Do not start the vibration immediately upon starting.

Do not vibrate on hardened surfaces.

Do not use the reversing clutch instead of the brake.
