Precautions for Road Roller Operation

Aug 27, 2025

① The direction, sequence, and number of compaction passes must strictly comply with the construction process drawings or documentation.

② The compaction process should proceed from initial compaction to final compaction. Light rollers should be used first, followed by heavy rollers. Rolling speeds should be increased from low to high. For tire-driven, single-wheel vibrating rollers, a speed of 2.5 to 5 km/h is generally appropriate.

③ If fine cracks appear during compaction, the mixture is too dry. Apply water before compaction. If the mixture is too wet, wait for the moisture to evaporate before compacting. If necessary, re-open the mixture and allow it to cool and dry before compacting. Compaction is most effective when the moisture content is optimal. Ensure that all materials placed on the same day are compacted within the same day.

④ The road roller should not be left on the same section for extended periods of time to prevent localized dents and compromised surface quality.

⑤ When using a vibratory roller to compact asphalt pavement, ensure proper operating parameters are selected, such as static pressure, frequency, amplitude, and rolling speed.

⑥ Roll the material immediately after the paver, first using a non-vibratory roller, then a vibratory roller, and finally with a tire roller.

⑦ The temperature of the asphalt concrete material should be strictly controlled. Rolling should begin no later than 15 minutes after paving and must be performed at the specified compaction temperature (generally 110-90°C). Compaction below 75°C will result in ineffective compaction. Additionally, the following aspects should be considered when using a road roller:

① Road Roller acceleration and deceleration should be as slow and smooth as possible.

② Stop vibration when changing direction during vibratory driving.

③ Apply a special emulsifier or sprinkle water on the wheel surface to prevent asphalt from sticking to the wheels.

④ When rolling longitudinal joints, apply a 200mm overlapping layer of rolling padding.
